Last year, Savage released their new, lightning-fast straight-pull action called the “Impulse.” This year, we get several new products that feature the Impulse Action which includes the Impulse Mountain Hunter.
This rifle features a lot more than the straight-pull Impulse action though. It also has a Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel, user-adjustable AccuTrigger, AccuStock, and a 20 MOA optics rail, just to name a few great features.

The new Impulse action on this rifle is smooth, fast, and very reliable. To work the action, there are only two movements required (backward and forward), compared to the four movements needed to operate a standard bolt-action.
When locked into battery, the bolt has 6 ball bearings that are pushed out of the bolt by a plunger. These ball bearings lock the bolt into place. Once fired, the pressure exerted on the bolt face further locks these ball bearings into place.
Once the bolt handle is pivoted backward by the user, the plunger is withdrawn and these bearings freely retract into the bolt so the action can be opened and the bullet extracted. Because of this mechanism, there is a steel barrel extension that the bolt locks into, allowing the rest of the receiver to be constructed of aluminum, a lighter material.
The Impulse Mountain Hunter is currently available and can be had in seven different calibers. These calibers are 28 Nosler, 300 Win Mag, 300 WSM, 308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and the new 7mm PRC.
Another aspect that distinguishes the Impulse Mountain hunter is the carbon fiber Proof Research barrel. Proof Research is well known for making accurate and consistent barrels and the carbon fiber construction keeps the system rigid and lightweight.
Other notable mentions include the adjustable length-of-pull and comb height with AccuFit technology, aluminum bedded stock, and an ambidextrous bolt handle that can be swapped from the right to the left side if desired.
